Wake
up call
David Brown
Today I got a wake up call
In a pew at a funeral
The day was cold as death
You could see everybody's breath
So you knew who was still alive
Although, some breath was Malboro Lights
We shuffled in like
refugees
A wooden box and wooden seats
And those who had to stand
They all looked up with clasped hands
Like they were all in a lift
Checking which way the numbers lit
Hold me as close as your
thoughts
Let us know love before loss
Some words were said but not
for long
Then they played a favourite song
A last request
In the Chapel of rest
And it was beautifully sung
Sung by a singer who died young
Hold me as close as your thoughts
Let us know love before loss
And as the casket disappeared
I thought of all the wasted years
My eyes were wellin' up
So I tilted my head up
And what did I behold
All the Crem’ lights had long-life bulbs
Hold me as
close as your thoughts
Let us know love before loss
