While
you were gone
David Brown
While you were gone
I mowed the lawn
I cleaned out the grate
I checked enough wood was sawn
I painted a door. I sharpened a knife
While you were gone I got on with my life
You went out shopping
- I waited here
I waited and I waited for you to appear
While you were gone
I still set the alarm
But I stayed in bed
I tried to keep your side warm
I cleaned out the fridge - of beers every night
While you were gone I got on with my life
I hung ‘round
the door and I practised my grin
Waiting for the moment when you walk back in
While you were
gone
I put some old records on
I grew a beard
I let my hair grow long
I re-watched some films - the same old sci-fi
While you were gone I got on with my life
I waited and I waited
for you to appear
I don’t know where you got to - but I’m still
here
While you were gone
I had a drink with John
I met his sister
Her temper short, her face long
We had a couple of kids - she became my wife
While you were gone I got on with my life |
