Kissed By The Queen
David Brown / Gene Dunford
The notes I wrote her have all been stowed
In a shoe box under her old wardrobe
My phone number has gone from her book
Though she knew it by heart and never had to look
But my passport picture she keeps in her purse
Kissed by the Queen on the tens and fivers
My passport picture she keeps in her purse
Faint, creased and ragged but I look much worse
The ring I gave her is back in the box
Forlorn in the drawer with bras and pants and socks
My best back of an envelope sketch
No longer adorns the board above her desk
Her friends don’t mention me when they meet
If I see them around down town they cross the street
The crop top in the charity shop
Looks just like the one I bought that day in Baron’s Court
