Bones
David Brown / Gene Dunford
This is the house where our love was scuppered
Skeletons rattle in every cupboard
Like a time-forgotten capsule with an endless patience
It looks like a scene from Great Expectations
This is the kitchen where out of the blue
After five years of marriage you’d found someone new
This is the window I looked out to think
Where my tears splashed the china unwashed in the sink
Bones in the wardrobe and under the stairs
I look in the mirror and the ghost of you stares
Remnants of love in every room
That were once filled with promise
But now filled with gloom
This is the lounge where we cuddled and kissed
Where your Lady Day records crackled and hissed
The stain on the wall is from Champagne last Christmas
The bottle exploded we ducked and it missed us
Now in the bathroom I stand and I stare
At the one lonely toothbrush that once was a pair
The white on the carpet is your talcum powder
There’s a strand of your hair in the tray of the shower
This is the bedroom where under the bedding
We consummated the night of our wedding
And under the mattress I still keep a letter
That says you would love me forever and ever
