Down And Out
David Brown / Gene Dunford
The sun is shining it’s heaven sent
Warms my bones on this hard wood bench
All my troubles and pains relent
With my second can of nine percent
Seagulls scream from office roofs
Dispossessed; far from their roots
Cars are gridlocked bonnet to boot
As I cough through my sidewalk cheroot
Irresistible irresponsibility I take it in - I blow it out
Irresistible irresponsibility what a glorious day
What a glorious day to be down and out
Like a feral dog, no home, no ties
I bark at people as they go by
They never look me in the eye
There but for the grace of God go I
People are rushing from dashboard to desk
Swapping steel for MDF
Spending whatever time is left
Hoping money will ward off death
Irresistible irresponsibility there’s only here, there’s only now
Irresistible irresponsibility what a glorious day
What a glorious day to be down and out
I bought into the master plan
Can I have it? Yes I can!
Stretched double like a rubber band
Then the deficit hit the fan
Irresistible irresponsibility was there really any doubt?
Irresistible irresponsibility what a glorious day
What a glorious day to be down and out
At one with the pigeons in the trees
Leftover living on life’s debris
But free to come and go as we please
And perch in the park on days like these
Irresistible irresponsibility this is what life’s all about
Irresistible irresponsibility what a glorious day
What a glorious day to be down and out
