Lucky Shoes
David Brown
Hey Grey, why the long face
Did you work all your life to arrive at this place
A pasture green with memories
But now eating weeds ain’t meeting needs
So what comes next for us
Do you spring wings like Pegasus
Put the sun in a golden chariot
Take the reins and carry it
Across the blue
Or are you only good for dog food and glue
So much for
Four lucky shoes
In dreams were you the lead steed
Or a famous mount from history
With Godiva astride your hide
Or the heavy thighs of Hoss Cartwright
But don’t shed a tear for us
The two halves of Sagittarius
‘cos our final destination
Could be a far off constellation
Up in the blue
Or are we coming back as apes in the zoo
So much for
Four lucky shoes
But hey we’re not done yet
We could still ride into the sunset
With the townsfolk saying so long friend
Heroes to the very end
So don’t be blue
Just try and enjoy every mouthful you chew
Before four more doors sport
Your lucky shoes
